Instructional Practice Adopted
Learning Cycle Mid Term 1 – 2nd Semester
Cooperative Learning
Subject & Title Introduction to electro-pneumatics
Project Based Learning
Grade & Cluster G11 – Automation & Mechatronics
Lab. Based
Date 31-01-2010

Module/Textbook Module ( 1 )

Approximate time
Four 45-minute class periods (4*45=180 min)

Warm-up

Ask the students, did you see before the yogurt filling machine, and what are the main parts in this machine? Ask the students about the type of control in this machine? We can use some pictures and movies for this purpose

Introduction

G = What is the advantage of using electro pneumatic system
L = Has anyone seen how the bus driver open and close the door
O =By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
· Identify different types of control and electrical switches
· Control of the pneumatic cylinders by using solenoid valves
S = We will work on the following distinct areas
- Identify the main types of electrical switches
- Differences between pushbutton and detent switches
- Different types of contact points
- Practical job indicating the control of the cylinders electrically
S = Safety in working with electro Pneumatics, make sure the desks and the chairs are setup correctly, and revise quickly the safety precautions in Pneumatics Lab.
S = As soon as you can control the cylinders by direct actuation, you will be
familiar about indirect controlling of the cylinders using relays

Lesson Objectives

In the end of this module the student will be able to:
1. Identify some types of linear actuators
2. Compare between different types of switches
3. Control of a lamp using different types of switches
4. Control of DAC using 5/2 way, single solenoid valve

Resources

List the materials and resources required for this lesson.

Textbook
Smart board
White Board
Module material
Power Point Presentation PPP
Cross sectional models
Projector
Fluid sim Software
Pneumatic Tables

Pre-requisites/Recap

Evoke prior learning by asking the students; what are the differences in using Pneumatic control and electro pneumatic control? And which is better?

Instructional Procedure

Obj. No.
Teacher’s role

Explain the contents of module 1 step by step and give a basic understanding using many teaching techniques like oral questions, discussing the different point of views, white and smart boards, PPP and magnetic symbols
And cross sectional models
- check the students understanding step by step and motivate the students for new ideas

student's role
Worming up and interaction
Answer the questions in the presentation
Listening and Watching the pictures and movies
Answer the questions in the module
Interaction in the class
All students should carrying out the practical job

5.1
Revision
Quick revision on the main parts of Pneumatic system, and the function of each item
Answer the oral questions and discuss the different point of views

5.2
Types of switches
- Pushbutton switches
- Detent switches
Answer the oral questions and discuss the different point of views

5.3
Some types of contact points
- N/O contact
- N/C contact
Draw the ISO symbols of N/O pushbutton switch and see the pictures on p 9 module 1
5.4
Types of Control
- Direct control
- Indirect control
Draw the ISO symbol of relay
5.5
Some Types of electrical switches
- Limit switch
- Pushbutton switch
In groups, students should collaboratively answer work sheets page 17 and 18, module 1
5.6
Fluid sim Software
Draw the two circuits on page 18 in module 1, and check your connections and make the simulation
In groups, the students draw the pneumatic circuit on p18 on the fluid sim software and simulate the circuit
5.7
Practical Jobs
Carrying out the same jobs on the pneumatics tables
In groups, the students carrying out the same pneumatic circuit on the pneumatic tables and operate the cylinders
5.8
Quiz
Small quiz covering this lesson
Solve the given quiz

Assessment

Students will verbally answer the questions during the whole lesson and share and discuss the other ideas
Students will draw by themselves electro pneumatic circuit on the fluid sim software
Students will be able to carry out the practical jobs and give them assistance when needed.
Give a small quiz at the end of the lesson

Homework

Draw the different types of electrical switches

Participation Criteria

Actively participation on the oral questions and constructive questions as well
Correct using of the software and pneumatic components

Lesson Closure

Conclusion
O = I hope that all of you now able to identify all types of switches
F = Good work, all been successful
F = in our next session, we are going to learn about relays
